April Ross

April Ross was one of the few female beach volleyball players who have won medals in multiple Olympics. Alix Klineman is the newest Olympian and will join her in Tokyo. Ross's aim is to get her first Olympic Gold. Since she's 39 years old, it may be her last chance. However, she's confident that winning the gold medal is within reach. Ross stated via NBC Boston: "If we do our best and even If we play our best I believe we can get the gold medal." "I'm also going to try to have a bit of luck." Ross was born in 1982 in Costa Mesa California where she resided with her parents and her sister. The athletic pursuits she pursued was continued by Newport Harbor High School where she played in a variety of different sports. Apart from indoor volleyball, she was a basketball player and also ran track in her pre-college days. When she played in the final sport she was clearly the standout. In her time at the high school level, according to her college profile, she played as an outside-hitter, middle-blocker and setter. She was awarded the Gatorade National Circle of Champions player of the Year in 1999 due to her accomplishments. In addition, she was awarded the 1999 Orange County Athlete of the Award for volleyball. Ross is working with Klineman from 2017. However, Ross's beach game had been established long before this. In fact, she's been able to win multiple events, one of which was with the legendary player of volleyball. From 2007 until 2013, she was a team together with Jennifer Kessy who more recently served as her and Klineman's coach. Kessy as well as Ross proved to be a formidable force in the international arena, taking home the world championship in 2009 as a team. In 2012, the duo won silver at London's Olympic Games. They were beaten out for the gold by the legendary team of Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh (Jennings). The fate of the matter was that Ross became Walsh Jennings' new partner after May-Treanor's retirement. Together, they won bronze in beach volleyball at the Rio Olympics of the year 2016. Ross started her college professional career playing for the Trojans of USC after graduation from high school. This was years before Ross made her debut on the sand and turned professional. Ross's playing time with the Trojans was impressive. Her freshman year in 2000 was when she won the Pac-10 and NCAA Freshman of the Award and also be named an All-American. She also helped her Trojans get to the Final Four. Her sophomore year was the time she was devastated by a personal setback, but she was able to repeat as an All-American. In her last two seasons as a member of the Trojans in the program, she led them to success by winning two the national title in consecutive years. In 2003-04, Ross was named the best female volleyball player at a collegiate level in America through The Honda Sports Award. Ross studied at USC in International Relations. Margie Ross, Ross' mother, never had the opportunity to see Ross' daughter blossom into an international beach volleyball star. Ross's mom Margie passed away in 2001, when Ross was still a USC sophomore. She had breast cancer. As a result, Ross remains close to her parent who died. And Margie remains a source of encouragement for her on the beach and in life.
