Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens - better popularly referred to as Queen Latifah - is an American actress, rapper and a singer. in film, music and television, Queen Latifah has won the award of two Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award, six more Grammy nods and has been nominated for the Emmy Award. Queen Latifah's parents were Lancelot and Rita Owens. They were both police officers. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher who taught at Irvington High School. Their divorce occurred when Latifah was ten years old. Latifah was brought up in the Baptist church and she attended Catholic high school located within Newark New Jersey. The stage name Latifah which means delicate and gentle in Arabic was given by her aunt when she was eight. Latifah, a 5'10" tall forward on the high school team, was always a tall girl. The number she sang was home from The musical The Wiz in a high school performance. Latifah was the first to begin beatboxing for Ladies Fresh. Latifah joined the Flavor Unit's original group, made up of several MCs as well as the producer DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King created an example of the rap Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. He emailed the recorded to Yo! MTV Raps which is hosted by Freddy. Dante Ross, an employee of Tommy Boy Music who heard the song and was signed by Latifah in 1988 for the release of her first single Wrath of My Madness.
